Administrative and biographical history: Sir James Weeks Szlumper (1834-1926), civil engineer, began his career with a London firm of engineers. In 1853 he was appointed surveyor of Cardiganshire, a position which he held for the next 25 years, and also served as deputy engineer of the Manchester and Milford Railway. It was Szlumper who secured the contract for the construction of the railway line between Aberystwyth and Carmarthen, and also of the light railway which still runs from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge (the Vale of Rheidol Railway). Szlumper also worked on railway lines in Montgomeryshire, on the Barry Railway, the Cardiff-Ogmore Line and the Pontypridd, Caerphilly and Newport Railway, as well as on railways in Devon.
Scope and content: Papers collected by Sir James Weeks Szlumper, 1865-1908, mainly relating to railways in Glamorgan and the south of England, 1878-1901, including the Barry Railway, 1884-1885; Vale of Glamorgan Railway, 1894; Pethick and Vale of Glamorgan Railway, 1889-1901, Nuttall, Lynton and Barnstaple Railway, 1898-1899; Plymouth, Devonport and Southwestern Junction Railway, 1883-1889; and Lynmouth and Minehead Light Railway, 1896-1898; railway maps, 1865-1908, including Ordnance Survey maps, 1896, in continuous length, showing the proposed railway from London to Swansea and its connections, and the proposed railway from London to Cardiff and its connections.

Note: Title based on contents. A manuscript volume containing Acts of Parliament promoted by the town of Aberystwyth, 1780-1874, was removed after deposit.
