Administrative and biographical history: Secondary school education in Radnorshire developed in the late 19th century, but did not become common until much later. Butler's Education Act 1944 every effort was made to ensure that every child should attend a secondary school without having to pay fees. The Eleven Plus examination was used to select schools: those who passed went to grammar schools, and secondary modern schools were built to educate those who failed. The Labour government of 1974-1979 abolished the distinction between grammar and secondary modern schools. Secondary modern schools in Radnorshire included Clyro Court, Knighton and Bryntirion, Rhayader.
