Administrative and biographical history: In 1830, Samuel Sandbach (1769-1851), of Liverpool, Lancashire, bought the Hafodunos estate, Llangernyw, Denbighshire, from the Rev. Thomas Hugh Clough, the son of the heiress of the Lloyd family of Hafodunos. Samuel Sandbach was sheriff of Denbighshire 1839, and sometime mayor of Liverpool. Samuel was succeeded by his son, Henry Robertson Sandbach (d. 1895). In 1855, he married Elizabeth Charlotte Williams (1827-189[]), daughter of Martin Williams, of Old Hope, in the parish of Westmoreland, Jamaica, and of Bryngwyn, in the parish of Llanfechain, Montgomeryshire, the son of Martin Williams (c.1723-86) of the parish of St James, Jamaica. Henry Robertson Sandbach was succeeded by his son, Samuel Sandbach (1856-1928), who was succeeded in turn by his brother Major-General Arthur Edmund Sandbach CB, DSO (1859-1928), of Bryngwyn. In 1902, Major-General Sandbach married Ina (b. 1867), daughter of George Sholto Gordon Douglas-Pennant (1836-1907), 2nd Baron Penrhyn, and left issue.
