Administrative and biographical history: Ystradyfodwg Urban District Council (Glamorgan) was formed in 1896, following the Local Government England and Wales Act 1894. It took over the functions of Ystradyfodwg Local Board of Health. The Council's area of responsibility was the parishes of Ystradyfodwg, part of Llanwonno, otherwise Llanwynno, and a small part of Llantrisant. It was renamed Rhondda Urban District Council in July 1897, and became Rhondda Borough Council in 1955. There are a number of records overlapping the period of change of status from Urban District Council to Borough Council.
Scope and content: Records of the Rhondda Urban District Council, 1895-1970, including: council and committee minutes and notices, registers of deeds and documents, advances, defaulters, mortgages, applications, auction sales, conveyancing, High Court action book, police courts record books, legal proceedings, grants of right of burial, bylaws and notices, Acts of Parliament, job application forms, register of appointees, Clerk's filing, abstracts of account, salaries register, Medical Officer of Health and Schools: Medical Officer of Health annual reports, summaries of births and deaths, registers of notifications of tuberculosis and other diseases, papers relating to Factory and Workshop Act 1901 and Shop Hours Act, correspondence and papers of Medical Officer of Health, registers of food samples and licenses, overcrowding surveys (Housing Act 1935), returns of cellar dwellings, register of and copy certificates of permitted numbers, newspaper cuttings, Public Health Inspector's registers, building regulation plans, Ferndale Gas, Light and Coke and Water Works Co records, school and college governing and managing bodies' records, education department letter books, financial estimates and statements, papers re the development plan under the Education Act 1944, school regulations and schemes, attendance records, registers of special place pupils, school files, records of admissions and examinations, and HMI reports.

Conditions governing access: Items containing information on named individuals may be restricted in accordance with the Data Protection Act and Record Office policy. These records are stored in an outside repository. They should be ordered at least a week in advance of an intended visit so that they can be brought into the Record Office for consultation in the search room.
