CONTEXT

Administrative and biographical history: Maesteg Urban District Council (Glamorgan) was formed in 1894, following the Local Government England and Wales Act. It took over the functions of Maesteg (Cwmdu) Local Board of Health. The Council's area of responsibility was the parishes of Cwmdu and Higher Llangynwyd. The surveyor's department accunmulated earlier planning applicatiosn and bye-laws. The Urban District Council ceased to exist on 31 March 1974, and was merged with the Urban Districts of Bridgend, Porthcawl, Ogmore and Garw and Penybont Rural District to form Ogwr (later Bridgend) Borough Council (1974-1996).

CONTENT

Scope and content: Records of the Maesteg Urban District Council, 1859-1974, includes: council and committee minutes, 1897-1974; public health inspector and medical officer of health, annual reports, 1966-1967; and surveyors department, planning applications and bye-laws, 1859-1945.
