Administrative and biographical history: Brymbo Ironworks were begun c. 1796 by John Wilkinson (1728-1808) on his Brymbo Hall estate, Denbighshire. The Brymbo Mineral and Railway Co. was formed in 1842, by Robert Roy, Henry Robertson (1816-1888) and others; Robertson bought the works outright in 1872. He, and managing director John Henry Darby (1858-1919), were the prime instigators of steel manufacture at the works. Brymbo Steel Co. Ltd was incorporated on 4 June 1884, and began production in January 1885. Brymbo was shut down in 1931, during the Depression, but was reopened in 1934 by the Brymbo Steel (Successors) Co. Ltd. After the Second World War the works were acquired by Guest, Keen and Nettlefolds (GKN), and re-acquired in 1955 and 1974 after periods of nationalisation, latterly from BSC (Holdings) Ltd. In 1986, the newly-formed United Engineering Steels Ltd became the new owners; they closed down Brymbo Steelworks in September 1990.
